What was the shoot?
Portrait session for Karen in Kingsnorth park, Folkestone.
The location. The gardens that Karen chose were perfect for an intimate portrait session that included bright flowers, benches and water fountains. I made a conscious decision early on to make the environment a real part of the images.
The company. Getting to know someone on a portrait shoot is vital if the photos are to have a natural feel to them. In my opinion, the first 10-15 minutes of the session before the camera appears is the most important. It is in this window you can put people at ease, talk them through the process and get to know the person so myself and Karen had a good chat walking round the gardens with no camera in sight!
Bright but overcast meaning nice even light. For a portraits, you couldn't wish for better! As the environment was beautiful, I shot mostly at around f4 to isolate Karen's face and blur the background but not to the point that the viewer wouldn't recognise the surroundings.
The framing of the plants, the flattering 45 degree angle, and the natural feel makes the below shot my favourite of the session.
Until next time, see you on the flip side chums
